A New Way Of Understanding Consumers

Shekhar is a 22-year PepsiCo veteran. He began his PepsiCo career as Franchise Manager in 1991, based out of Gujarat. Over the next 9 years he worked in various sales and general management roles in different parts in India. His critical experience during these years includes the startup of the first India COBO in Mumbai. He led the sales team which delivered CSD leadership in the Mumbai market within 14 months of the COBO start up. He was also involved in the successful integration of a local beverage company acquired by PepsiCo in Mumbai which was instrumental in delivering the share leadership. In 1999 he moved to Bangladesh as a country manager and oversaw the induction of a new bottling partner. From 01st April 2013, Shekhar is the COO & General Director of the Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam Beverage, the joint venture for the Vietnam Bottling Business. He still remains a part of the PepsiCo Asia region Executive committee. Prior to this, he was the PO 1 Business Unit General Manager for Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. He moves to Vietnam in 2000 as Unit manager for the South, subsequently he took over as the sales head for the country. In 2005 he moved to role of COO (marketing, sales and manufacturing) for the beverage portfolios. In 2008, Shekhar became the COO for all functions. Shekhar was part of the team that delivered beverage leadership in the country by 2005 and the financial turnaround of the business. Today, Vietnam has leadership across CSD, Water, Juice Drinks, Energy Drink and Tea. The business has reached critical scale with 6 plants, 2200+ employees and a wide portfolio of products spanning CSD/NCB/ Suntory brand. Vietnam has been at the forefront of innovation in the region with Sting a brand invented there becoming a regional offering across multiple countries. On the people front Vietnam has a well development management trainee program helping to build local talent, and has also achieved a 34% female representation in the leadership team.      

Prior to PepsiCo, Shekhar was the Regional Sales Manager in Marico Industries for North India. In Marico, he led the team to triple the business is less than four years. He joined Marico in 1986 as a management trainee from the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune. Shekhar has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Fergusson College and a Marketing MBA from the University of Pune.

He is a keen Bridge player as well as a golfer. He enjoys reading especially contemporary geo-politics and history. He prefers to spend as much time with the family as he can.
